Types and Responsibilities of Local Agencies

Different kinds of public agencies have responsibility for different kinds of functions. The document (at right) describes the types of local and regional agencies in California.

California has four main kinds of local agencies:

• Counties
• Cities
• Schools
• Special Districts

There are also a number of other kinds of agencies representing local interests, including:

• Joint Powers Authorities
• Councils of Governments
• Local Agency Formation Commissions
